Knospler, an Iraq war veteran from Pennsylvania, is charged with a single count of second degree homicide after deputies say he shot and killed Baldwin in the Racks Gentlemen's Club parking lot on Oct. 4.
A bouncer would later tell investigators that he saw Baldwin walk up to a car that he presumably thought belonged to his friend. He tried to get into the passenger side door and when it was apparently locked, he walked over to the driver's side.
Knospler appeared in Natrona County Circuit Court on Thursday afternoon for his preliminary hearing, accompanied by California attorney Joseph H. Low IV.
and in the hand of the alleged victim, James Kade Baldwin.
Ellis said when Knospler was asked about the broken window, the suspect effectively said there would need to be an investigation into what happened. Knospler later made the statement, more or less, that he acted in self defense, Ellis told the court.

Assistant District Attorney Joshua Stensaas questioned Ellis first. Ellis said preliminary reports indicate Knospler's car was moving at the time Baldwin was shot, and that it did not appear Knospler made any attempt on his cell phone to call 911 after leaving Racks.
Stensaas, the assistant district attorney, objected when Low attempted to reference Baldwin's criminal record. Circuit Court Judge Michael Huber agreed with Stensaas. Baldwin's family previously stated that he avoided violence.
When it was Low's turn to question Ellis, the defense attorney focused on the possibility that the driver's side window was broken from the outside by Baldwin's fist. Ellis said there were more tests to run and that the evidence was not yet conclusive. He also said investigators were not certain how the glass got into Baldwin's hand.
