FULLBACK MENTALITY: To play a position that involves larger players, Wyoming fullback Drew Van Maanen tries to get himself angry before games and practices.HE SAID IT: "For me, before practice I try to get myself mad, because I know I don't weigh as much as those d ends I'm going against. I get myself mad and psyched up because I'm taking on someone a lot bigger than me. You have to like being physical." Van Maanen.Drew Van Maanen is an architect of angry. Before practice, he builds bad moods. Wyoming's 6 foot 1, 238 pound fullback starts with a memory, something from his recent past that incurs a scowl or a muttered curse. Maybe it was a game in high school when he dropped a pass or missed a block. It could be a failed test, a broken relationship or an unfair grounding, too.He takes the memory and lets it fester in his mind. It bubbles and corrodes. Soon, he's a ball of violent, explosive anger. He's ready to take the field."For me, before practice I try to get myself mad, because I know I don't weigh as much as those d ends I'm going against," Van Maanen said, a smile replacing his usual practice scowl. "I get myself mad and psyched up because I'm taking on someone a lot bigger than me. You have to like being physical."For someone who hunts for contact, Van Maanen came to the right place. Once he heard the news that Craig Bohl was the new coach at Wyoming, the redshirt freshman began scheming to switch positions. Labeled a tight end throughout his redshirt season, Van Maanen had actually played fullback most of his life. The move to a pro style offense provided a reunion for the compact, powerful wrecking ball. In converting to fullback, he was actually going home."That's my origins," Van Maanen said. "I played it my whole life, ever since I was a little kid. So when I found out, it was good for me. I knew they were bringing in a lot of tight ends and I knew at fullback there weren't a whole lot of people signing up for the job."Van Maanen approached then running backs coach Pete Nike Cortez Womens Yellow

Kaligis about the prospect of playing fullback, and a few weeks later the Parker, Colo., native had a new number 36 and a new position to boot. Brandon Lukenbill, a former linebacker, also made the switch to the offensive side of the ball.Van Maanen and Lukenbill are far from finished products. They're physical, but they lack polish. Wyoming fullback Van Maanen plays angry

"want to," for a fullback, is both a crucial and elusive element. This isn't a heralded position, where carries are high and autographs are sought after. May to gallop through. It's to throw their body in front of a steaming freight train so the quarterback behind them escapes harm. It's to be one tough Nike Cortez Khaki son of a gun to deliver a blow and expect little recognition in return."Coach Bath has talked to me and Brandon about the fact that we have to be very humble at the position," Van Maanen said. "We're not going to get 10 carries a game. We're not going to get passed to all the time."Through the first couple spring practices, I've already humbled myself. I know that when we're out there at practice, I'm blocking. That's my role in this offense, and I'm fine with that. That's the position I took on, and I'm going to do it."Van Maanen's role will meet reality on Saturday, when he throws a shoulder into blitzers and wipes out charging linebackers in Wyoming's first scrimmage of the spring. His performance will be brutal, but not without its flaws. The converted tight end knows this. To receive instruction, his eyes will remain fixed on Bath."Drew is one of those kids where his eyes are always wide open," Bath said with a chuckle. "He's a young man that's fun to coach, because he always has questions. As soon as he gets done with a play, he turns around and his eyes come right to me."Van Maanen is hungry to learn, but he's also craving to hit. By the time he steps on Jonah Field on Saturday morning, his mental wheels will be in motion. The memories will be vivid and tantrum inducing. The anger will return."I like it," Van Maanen said of his new and old position. "I like butting heads with people. It's nice.".

Mike Bath, they are a promising block of clay, ready to be molded."The beautiful thing about both of those young men is that they do have want to," Bath said. "They want to do it. So it's going to be a process, but it's a fun process to see those young men get better every day."The Nike Cortez Ultra Br Canada
