The frame uses the same one piece, oversize bottom bracket shell and chainstays as Specialized's purebred racer, the Tarmac SL3. Crafting this part of the bike as a single piece accounts for some of the stiffness the bike doesn't yield when you put your power into the pedals. For stiffness up front, which translates into whipquick responsiveness and sure handling thanks to a lack of flex, the junction of the top, head and down tubes also borrows the Tarmac's one piece construction. To further eliminate flex, the top tube, which is dramatically thin near the saddle, flares toward the front, growing wider than the head tube where they meet. Specialized also developed its own bearing sizes because its designers thought the available standards were either too stiff or not stiff enough. The result is a bike without a hint of sway under your own torque or in high speed turns.

What really sets the Roubaix apart, however, is how it mates comfort to such speed. Specialized created bigger Zertz inserts and changed them from press fit to bolt in. This increased the tension in the rubbery shock absorbers, so they soak up vibration more consistently.
