still, if you have any individual concerns, please don't hesitate to talk with Evan. Thanks so much for writing for us!
We do not want to stifle creativity. Rather, we want our pieces to be the best they can be, of a quality consistent throughout the publication. There's a lot of room to maneuver within these guidelines Nike Cortez Nm Qs Pack

an essay or editorial. An editorial should have a slant with facts to back it up. Almost without exception, reviews should focus on the eatery or event, not meander too far into unrelated territory. Above all, strive for clarity. If a sentence is so long and winding that you get winded when reading it, perhaps it could be two sentences. If you're tempted to write "(whatever that means)" after a metaphor, perhaps choose a different metaphor.
Deadlines: We try to be flexible enough to allow for news (and life) to happen. The overarching reality is we need to go to press Wednesday morning, and if too many stories come in at the last minute, we can't put out a good paper. Our general guidelines:
Expletives: Use profanity judiciously. Ask yourself if there's a better way to say what you're trying to say. We're not going to edit song titles, and if an interview subject spews profanities, that indicates something about him/her. But if we run them indiscriminately, they have less impact when used for a purpose. Ask Evan if you're unsure. Some stories work with self references but also can work without them, such as reviews. Some stories shouldn't have self references at all, such as most Newslines and objective reporting. As with profanity, ask yourself if you really need to be in the story. Many readers won't know who you are, so injecting yourself into the piece isn't as helpful as another way of getting the point across and you may find your piece is more compelling if you're a fly on the wall instead of in the soup.
all you add to the paper. Our goal is to be independent and edgy in a mature, professional way. Every story is different, so hard and fast rules sometimes cause more problems than they alleviate. Consider the following guidelines as the expectations we have for the work you craft for our readers. When in doubt, talk to your editor.
Style: We differ from daily newspapers in our storytelling. We are not as afraid of analysis and interpretation; we use a magazine approach in how our stories unfold, with descriptions and drama rather than recitation of facts. One of the things that's great about CN is the variety of voices and styles that convey the stories. Still, certain pieces benefit from specific approaches. Please let your editor know as soon as possible if you can't make a preset deadline; often we can shuffle things around to accommodate changes, but early warnings make a huge difference. That said, each story has different needs; when you're going over the assignment with an editor, this is one of the things we'll discuss. Please include a list of sources with their contact information when you file the story so, for basic questions during the editing process, we can contact them rather than contact you so you can contact them and contact us again. If you have a source who doesn't want to be named or refuses to speak unless he/she goes unnamed, check with Evan. We prefer all our sources to be named and on the record, but there are times when anonymous sources are warranted.
